Hove Lawns, Hove 1965 May 13-26 A touring Super Cinerama Mobile Theatre runs for two weeks. It had launched a year earlier at Richmond Athletic Ground to the south-west of London. Housed in a 128ft (39.0m) diameter tent made by the West German firm Stromeyer and raised by a giant crane, it seated 1,260 who looked at a deeply curved screen measuring 103ft by 37ft (31.3m x 11.3m). The film This is Cinerama was shown twice daily (three shows on Saturdays) with admission costing between 5s and 12s 6d. • The short-lived £200,000 venture, the first touring cinema project in the UK since before the First World War, was the idea of Lord John Manners (1922-2002), brother of the 10th Duke of Rutland of Belvoir Castle. He later set up Belvoir Fruit Farms and introduced a range of fruit cordials. |
